On the 23rd and 24th of April 2013, five students of SKWM including myself attended the River Rangers Training of Trainees. This was the first time we had heard of this program and our teachers, Pn Sangeeta n Miss Shazila couldn't offer us much information either. We were all excited to find out what was in store for us.
We started our morning with breakfast in SMK Taman Melawati. We made friends with other students from nearby school. Later, we listened to a few talks about the River Rangers program. We found the talks and video clips very educational and interesting.
After lunch, we were divided into two groups. the first group went to Site 1 and Group 2 went to Site 2. We took a long walk to Site 2. Site 2 was quite dirty and smelly, but the water was clear. We conducted the physical and chemical testings at this site with the help of Abang Firdaus. Suddenly, it started raining heavily and we were stuck by the river. Our hopes of an eventful and adventurous evening was smashed into pieces. :`-( Sadly, we returned to the school hall by bus.
The next day, after a hearty breakfast, we went to Site 1. Yeah! Another river adventure! We were given boots to wear and we marched across the road to reach the river. We wanted to do a biological monitoring investigation of the river. The river was clean and beautiful compared to Site 1. There was a lot of greenery by the river. Once we were there, Miss Jegathes guided us into the river. We were extremely excited to enter the river with our small fishing nets. We picked up snails and placed them in the pail. We tried to catch some fish but did not get any. Fortunately, there were no leeches.
